Tips & Tricks for Mac OS X

Whether you're new to the Mac OS X operating system or are an Apple veteran, it can be difficult to keep track of the slew of tricks and shortcuts offered by your device. Here's a quick rundown of some of the most useful and basic features that can come in handy when using your computer.

Mac Keyboard Shortcuts

Here's a list of the popular keyboard shortcuts for Mac OS X:

[Cmd] + [W]: close current app window.

[Cmd] + [C]: Copy.

[Cmd] + [V]: Paste.

[Cmd] + [Shift] + [3]: Capture screenshot.

[Cmd] + [Shift ]+ [4]: Capture a screenshot of a specific area of your screen.

[Cmd] + A: Select All.

Record Your Screen with QuickTime

It might be useful to be able to record what's happening on the screen of your computer, especially when one wants to create a tutorial or demonstration.

Open the QuickTime app, which is already installed on your Mac, and go to File > New Screen Recording. Click the Record button and then select the area of the screen that you want to record.

How To Change Scroll Direction

If it's your first time using a Mac, then you may be surprised to see that the direction of the mouse scroll is inverted. You can change the scroll direction in the trackpad settings.

Go into your System Preferences > Mouse or Trackpad > Point & Click. Clear the Scroll direction: natural checkbox to reverse the scroll.

Importing and Exporting Bookmarks

The latest version of Safari allows you to import your favorites from web browsers such as Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox.

Open Safari and click File > Import From and select the desired web browser.

Customize Folder Icons

You can make your important folders to stand out from the rest by editing the folder icons with custom images.

Right-click on the folder that you want to edit > Get Info. The folder properties will open. Click the small padlock icon displayed at the bottom right and enter your admin password. Drag and drop the desired image to the folder properties window to customize your folder icon.
